Michael C. Liu, Ed.D., M.F.A.

I am an award-winning interdisciplinary artist, educator, and researcher whose work bridges acting, community engagement, and social impact. Born and raised in Taiwan and based in New York City, I bring over two decades of experience harnessing the transformative power of the arts to foster personal and professional growth, cross-cultural understanding, and social cohesion.

 

I founded ACTING4ALL and Acting Workshop for Non-Actors during the COVID-19 pandemic, after witnessing firsthand the profound effects of socioeconomic disparities in both local and global communities. Guided by my background in ethnic studies and pedagogical research, I began using acting—an often inaccessible yet powerful human tool—as a means to cultivate deeper self-awareness, empathy, and understanding between individuals.

 

As interest in my work has grown alongside my continued research, my workshops have reached professionals from diverse fields as well as individuals in some of the most vulnerable communities—where access to the arts is often most limited, yet most needed. In 2025, I began partnering with community-based organizations serving under-resourced neighborhoods in New York City, including East Harlem, Brownsville, and Tremont, supporting participants in discovering happiness, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

 

In addition to my community-based practice, I teach at the City University of New York and have presented my research and workshops on art, education, hate, and social justice in peer-reviewed journals and at organizations such as the American Society of Criminology and the International Association of Genocide Scholars. As an actor, my work has been recognized by TheatreMania as “one of the most emotionally wrenching performances of the year.”
